Muslim Festivals

Goa does not quite have a sizeable Muslim population and it ranks after Hindus and Christians. Though there are not many Muslim festivals in Goa, the main ones are celebrated with much joy and enthusiasm. The two main Muslim festivals that are celebrated in Goa are Id-ul-Fitr and Id-ul-Zuha.

Eid is celebrated with extreme enthusiasm in Goa as it is also the 'Festival of Fast-Breaking'. After a rigorous fast in Ramzan, Eid is definitely a welcome occasion. Great rush can be seen in markets a days before the festival as people do a lot of shopping for gifts, clothes and sweetmeats. The Muslim colonies are beautifully decorated with streamers and elaborate feasts are prepared in Muslim households.

The capital of Bardez Taluka, on the national highway, is the cross roads of the network of highways covering whole of Northern Goa. Weekly fair on Friday, is held at the modem streamlined market, attended by large crowds.

Eid-ul-Zuha Eid-ul-Zuha
This festival is important to all Muslims as it marks the sacrifice of Prophet Abraham's son. It is celebrated all over India and great feasts are prepared in the honor of the Prophet.
Eid-ul-Fitr Eid-ul-Fitr
This festival is celebrated all over India with great zeal and enthusiasm as it marks the end of the holy month of Ramzan. After a month of fasting, the Muslims look forward to celebrating it in a grand way and prepare elaborate feasts and organize fairs for rejoicing and enjoyment.
Bakri-Id Bakri-Id
Id-ul-Zuha or Bakrid is one of the most celebrated festivals among Muslims of India.
Ramzan Ramzan
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim calendar. The Month of Ramadan is also when it is believed the Holy Quran "was sent down from heaven, guidance unto men, a declaration of direction, and a means of Salvation". It is during this month that Muslims fast.
Muharram Muharram
Muharram, or the sacred month, marks the beginning of the Muslim year. The word Muharram also means respect. The first ten days of the month are observed as a period of mourning.
